Best of 2010 List

Welcome to our first of what will be hopefully many “Best of” lists. We are basically selecting our favorites from the past year in gaming. You will notice a few things different from our list compared to other sites though. First off, we don’t have a “best game of 2010″. I know its kind of weird but when it came down to select a winner we could not settle on one specific game. There were so many great games that it was really hard to narrow it down for specific categories, let alone an overall “GOTY”. Our list is made up of categories such as best role playing, best first person, etc. We made only one list and games from every system were eligible. We also did pick our “Overall best of” for each platform, too. Also, please keep in mind these are just our picks. This is not the definitive list for every human on earth. So don’t start freaking out if we didn’t include your favorite title on here.
Here’s a quick reference to all the winners at a single click!
Best 1st Person Shooter | Best 3rd Person Shooter | Best Action Game | Best Fighting Game
Best Action/Adventure | Best RPG | Best Licensed Game | Best Music/Rhythm Game

With all that said, lets start!
BEST
1st PERSON SHOOTER

HALO Reach (Xbox 360)
We looked at all of the FPS’ that came out this year and had a hard time picking one but we finally went with Halo Reach. The game is beautiful and was a perfect end to Bungie’s run in the Halo universe that they created. With its near perfect controls, solid campaign (which can be completely played in co-op with 3 other friends), online competitive multiplayer, Firefight, Theater mode, and The Forge, this game has everything you could ever want from a FPS and then some.
Runner-ups:
Call of Duty Black Ops (Xbox 360, PS3, PC)
Battlefield Bad Company 2 (Xbox 360, PS3, PC)
Bioshock 2 (Xbox 360, PS3, PC)
BEST
3rd PERSON SHOOTER

Alan Wake (Xbox 360)
Selecting the best third person shooter was also a bit frustrating. In the end we both agreed upon Alan Wake. I mean, we both actually started smiling when we started to remember some of the gunfights. Its clever use of light mixed into the gunplay was not only original but fun as hell. Nothing beat the feeling of suddenly being overwhelmed by shadows and then bringing out one of your flares to save your ass. Simple household items such as flashlights, batteries and flare guns end up becoming powerful weapons. Even though Alan Wake can also be considered a Survival Horror game, the light based gunplay definitely takes center stage.
Runner-ups:
Red Dead Redemption (Xbox 360, PS3)
Vanquish (Xbox 360, PS3)
Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Conviction (Xbox 360)
BEST
ACTION GAME

Bayonetta (Xbox 360, PS3)
I know, I know, we didn’t pick God of War III. As amazing as God of War III was, we felt it was just more of the same but in HD. Bayonetta had enough style, creativity and originality to easily take top spot for us. Not only is the game drop dead gorgeous, (as well as Bayonetta herself – I don’t care how long her neck is) but everything plays smoothly and the controls are near perfect. With an amazing combo system and “Witch Time” its not hard to see why Bayonetta gets the top spot in this genre. Oh and did I mention that Bayonetta’s entire outfit is composed of her own hair and in her special attacks she uses all of her hair when she is fighting? Yeah, do the math.
Runner-ups:
God of War III (PS3)
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow (Xbox 360, PS3)
Alan Wake (Xbox 360)
BEST
FIGHTING GAME

Super Street Fighter IV (Xbox 360, PS3)
Capcom brings back what was probably the best fighting game in a long time from last year and injects a ton of new content. A lot of people were worried that we were going to be charged for just a couple characters and stages. Capcom proved everyone wrong by not only adding eight new fighters and some new stages but also new Ultra combos as well as revamping the online portion with better matchmaking as well as lobbies. They also fine tuned the already solid gameplay to make the game even more balanced than it already was. Luis and I spent countless of hours playing the living daylights out of this game and I am sure that will continue in 2011 as well.
Runner-ups:
Tatsunoko vs. Capcom (Wii)
Blazblue Continuum Shift (Xbox 360, PS3)
Naruto Shipudden Ultimate Ninja Storm 2 (Xbox 360, PS3)
BEST
ACTION/ADVENTURE

Heavy Rain (PS3)
How far would you go to save someone you love? Heavy Rain was one hell of an experience. The game throws you into the heart of a gripping and emotional psychological thriller. This is one of those games that constantly has you at the edge of your seat the entire time. Everything from the characters to the story were expertly crafted and the game made you actually care about what happened to each of the 4 playable characters. The real treat was definitely the game design though. All of your actions can completely alter or change the outcome of how your adventure plays out. Luis and I promised not to talk about the game until we both finished it. Let me tell you that was such an amazing conversation since even though we played the same game, both of our actions or choices were totally different. Now that is truly amazing.
Runner-ups:
Darksiders (Xbox 360, PS3)
Enslaved (Xbox 360, PS3)
Sonic Colors (Wii)
BEST
ROLE-PLAYING

Mass Effect 2 (Xbox 360, PC)
Wow. Just wow. Its no secret that as amazing as the first Mass Effect was, the game suffered from numerous technical issues. Bioware listened and not only cleaned up every single problem or issue that the original had they also delivered an even more engrossing tale. Mass Effect 2 is undoubtedly an amazing game but what really shines is your crew. The writers and designers are masters at giving each character so much personality and depth its scary at some times. The game just feels – and is – epic. Whats even more amazing is that since all of your choices directly affect story and in a lot of cases who lives or dies, this epic tale feels personalized. You wont find a better experience out there.
Runner-ups:
Fallout New Vegas (Xbox 360, PS3, PC)
3D Dot Game Heroes (PS3)
Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep (PSP)
BEST
LICENSED GAME

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game (Xbox Live Arcade, PSN)
This game was a perfect example of how to properly use a license. The game took the already amazing comic book world of Scott Pilgrim and turned it into an addictive 4 player brawler. All of the series humor and originality has been left intact. You can easily feel that the developers really tried to make a great game instead of a cash cow title to capitalize on the books/film. Paul Robertson’s amazing 2D animation fit perfectly with the comic’s style. Scott Pilgrim vs The World is one of those games that is still a hell of a lot of fun even if you have never heard of the books or the movie.
Runner-ups:
Naruto Shipudden Ultimate Ninja Storm 2 (Xbox 360, PS3)
Transformers War for Cybertron (Xbox 360, PS3)
Goldeneye (Wii)
BEST
MUSIC/RYTHM GAME

DJ Hero 2 (Xbox 360, PS3, Wii)
DJ Hero 2 improves the series by adding some much needed multiplayer modes like actual DJ Battles for example. An addition that might seem minor but to me felt huge was the ability to finally be able to play against Lu, (since he is a god in music games) on a different difficulty level. The game also had probably the best track list in any music game this year. Ranging from pop stars like Lady GaGa to DeadMau5. Also, just like the first game, the mixes in the sequel are phenomenal. Marvin Gaye’s “Lets Get It On” mixed with Rihannas “Umbrella”? Outstanding. There is definitely something for everyone here. All in all we gave the edge to DJ Hero over Rockband due to the major improvement over the first and the tracklist being so damned enjoyable.
Runner-ups:
Rockband 3 (Xbox 360, PS3, Wii)
Dance Central (Xbox 360)
BEST
SPORTS GAME

NBA 2K11 (Xbox 360, PS3, Wii)
Holy crap was this game impressive. I was instantly floored by the realism, animation, commentary and presentation. There has never been a sports video game to have this kind of attention to detail. Every time I play the game I am treated to what can easily be mistaken for an actual NBA game. The announcers will talk about players stats from ACTUAL NBA games from previous days. There is a smooth halftime show as well as a bad ass player of the game montage at the end once the buzzer sounds. No one else has come close to recreating any sports league like 2K has here. Everything from indivudual players mannerisms or style have been expertly crafted and put in the game. All of these reasons and more is why we believe NBA 2K11 is – without a doubt – the best sports game this year and probably ever. Oh and did we mention that the game has Michael Jordan? Because it does.
Runner-ups:
NBA JAM (Xbox 360, PS3, Wii)
MLB 10: The Show (PS3)
BEST
ARCADE RACER

Split/Second (Xbox 360, PS3)
Split/Second is definitely an enjoyable title and very easy to anyone who likes racing games. Never have I seen racing with the level of destruction that you find here. Best part? The game looks gorgeous while doing so. Set in the fictional world of a racing reality show also adds a unique twist to the game. Gameplay is definitely hot with all the power plays and route changes, each race will always bring something new to the table. So those of you gamers who got a kick out of Burnout and arcade style racers or if you just like to destroy or blow stuff up you will definitely enjoy what Split/Second has to offer.
Runner-ups:
Need For Speed Hot Pursuit (Xbox 360, PS3)
Blur (Xbox 360, Ps3, PC)
BEST
SIM RACING GAME

F1 2010 (Xbox 360, PS3)
Formula 1 racing comes back with the help from the true talent at Codemasters. F1 2010′s visuals are impeccibly beautiful, from the vehicles to each specific track, most notably Singapore. The simulation is both a blessing and a curse, as it may shun away new comers altogether, and also boosts the difficulty learning curve to even the experienced driving gamer. It’s not just the sheer speed and the timing of your breaks and following the racing line, either, as the implementation of weather can totally change your game in an instant. To top it off, the presentation helps you move along the game without boring yourself to sleep from sliding from menu to menu, and while some things may fall flat, something new and well done is always welcomed.
Runner-ups:
Gran Turismo 5 (PS3)
BEST
STRATEGY GAME

Plants vs. Zombies (Xbox 360, PC)
Even though we would probably be stoned for this choice, we gladly stand behind it. There is no other strategy game that is as charming and cute and gives you solid strategy gameplay like Plants vs Zombies. The game gives you an assortment of plant types to help you come up with some interesting ways to defend your home. Just when you think you have the game figured out they throw in night levels or a pool as well as different challenging zombie types. The game also sports an addictive multiplayer mode as well so you and your buds can take turns being plants or zombies. The game is also accessible to either strategy veterans or newcomers. This is definitely a game you can easily lose some hours while playing.
Runner-ups:
Starcraft II (PC)
Civilization V (PC)
BEST
2D PLATFORMER

Super Meat Boy (Xbox Live Arcade, PC)
Super Meat Boy is both a hilarious homage to old school games and tough as nails platformer. If one thing’s certain, will always come back for more of Meat Boy. Make no mistake about it though, as goofy as Meat Boy looks, this is one hard game. You will need some serious precision and skills to pass the stages here. Expect to die hundreds and hundreds of times and probably yell as many expletives as well. Don’t feel scared to try it out though. Because as hard as it is the game never gets to the point where you feel like quitting. Team Meat definitely has a real winner here with their obvious throwback to the glory days of NES gameplay.
Runner-ups:
Kirby’s Epic Yarn (Wii)
Limbo (Xbox Live Arcade, PC)
Donkey Kong Country Returns (Wii)
BEST
3D PLATFORMER

Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Wii)
Nintendo has been, and still is, the master of 3D platforming since Super Mario 64. Even though this game is pretty much an expanded version of the first Galaxy game, no other 3D platformer can even come close to the quality found here. Everything from controls to the stages has been mastered. Nintendo basically took last years game and infused it with all new new stages, power-ups and best of all Yoshi. It’s real hard not to crack a smile when you first ride Yoshi and start gobbling everything in sight. There’s always something special about Nintendo’s first party titles that’s hard to describe. Its like they dig into your childhood and give you such a great sense of nostalgia yet throw in new elements. Super Mario Galaxy 2 is no exception.
Runner-ups:
Sonic Colors (Wii)
Disney Epic Mickey (Wii)
BEST
PUZZLE GAME

Limbo (Xbox Live Arcade)
You know you are in for a treat when the game starts off and about 20 seconds in you see your character (a nameless little boy) impaled on a spike or get trashed by a bear trap. Limbo sports chilling black and white visuals as well as an amazing sound design. The first thing you notice is that there is no “soundtrack” per se. All you hear is the pitter-patter of the main protagonist’s feet as he runs as well as all the ambient sounds of the world. The game has some devious puzzles as well in store for you that deal with all sorts of physics such as gravity or water. The game does a great job of making you really feel alone. For example – and this is kind of spoiler territory so skip ahead from here if you’ve yet to play – you eventually end up seeing some other children and you feel glad, and then that happiness suddenly turns to terror once you realize that instead of befriending, you they would rather slaughter you.
Runner-ups:
Professor Layton and the Unwound Future (DS)
P.B Winterbottom (Xbox Live Arcade, PC)
Super Scribblenauts (DS)
BEST
DOWNLOAD GAME

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game
Scott Pilgrim vs The World is a nice change of pace and a great homage to the glory days of gaming with its old school style gameplay. The zany world of Scott Pilgrim can easily find its rightful place in the gaming world. All of the comics humor and style is beautifully recreated and remains intact. The gameplay is tight and responsive and multiplayer makes this title shine even more. Throw in one of the best chiptune soundtracks ever by Anamanaguchi and you have yourself one hell of a game. It is such a shame that it lacks online play. To be honest we almost did not give the game this title due to the lack of online. There is just no excuse for not including it especially in this day and age. Regardless though, the game is very enjoyable and was definitely the years best download title in our eyes.
Runner-ups:
Super Meat Boy (Xbox Live Arcade, PC)
Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light (Xbox Live Arcade, PSN, PC, Iphone)
Mega Man 10 (Xbox Live Arcade, PSN, Wii)
BEST
ONLINE MULTIPLAYER

Super Street Fighter IV (Xbox 360, PS3)
What’s this? A shooter not picked for online multiplayer? Pish posh! But ho, hear us out! Super Street Fighter IV was, without a doubt, the ultimate arcade experience, and we didn’t need quarters, tokens, an arcade cabinet, or a second body next to you to do so. The ranked matches scored you based on how well you did overall against a higher or lower ranked player, and based on a specific character as well. You had the party mode that had up to eight players lined up to play, could watch you play your fight, and choose to record the replay, while dishing out smack talk before their turn came up. Later on down the line, they added Tournament Mode, which is undoubtedly one of the best things you could do to a fighting game, and even with the bracket, it still played out like party mode. Finally, you also had the replay mode, which let you watch replays from not just yours and your friends, but from every player around the globe, based on what type of characters, to what legacy the fighters came from as well. To top this all off, this package came with an upgrade of 3 extra levels, more trial modes, and 8 extra fighters. Price tag? $40.
Runner-ups:
Battlefield Bad Company 2 (Xbox 360, Ps3, PC)
Halo Reach (Xbox 360)
Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood (Xbox 360, PS3, PC)
BEST
CO-OP GAME

Dead Rising 2 (Xbox 360, PS3)
What could be better than you and thousands of zombies and an endless amount of weaponry at your disposal to slaughter them with? The answer is easy. All of what I mentioned and a friend. Yep. You can actually bring in a buddy to enjoy the undead bashing with you. Everything from weaponry to clothing is intact. So don’t expect to get a half assed version of the regular game either. Luis and I had an amazing time with the game. Beards + Banana Hammocks + Amazing Hats = Hilarious.
Runner-ups:
Halo Reach (Xbox 360)
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game (Xbox Live Arcade, PSN)
Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light ( Xbox Live Arcade, PSN, PC, Iphone)
BEST
CHARACTER

John Marston -Red Dead Redemption (Xbox 360, PS3)
This year gave us quite a handful of characters, new and old, that gave an amazing aura surrounding the game to the point where the game probably wouldn’t be what it was without them. John Marston was our pick, and – while it was almost unanimous for us – before we finally came to agreement, we seemed to hesitate after the fact. The other three on our ballot – Bayonetta, with her smarmy charm and style, Alan Wake and his wit and narration, and Scott Shelby’s heartwarming bravado that tore us in two when we find out the insufferable truth at the end – never stood a chance.
John Marston not only was well written, but he was well acted and well portrayed in Red Dead Redemption. Every motion he made, every single thing he said and did had a force and meaning behind him. As the player, we became him, and with every decision we made and every twist of the knife in his back that came with it, we felt it. The love for his family, the right friendships he made and the ones he did so only out of good samaritan, we were right there with him. We stood there with him till the very end. Not one of us didn’t cry foul at that final moment. John fought for it, and we wished he didn’t. No other character this year will pluck your heart strings like John did in 2010.
Runner-ups:
Alan Wake – Alan Wake (Xbox 360)
Scott Shelby – Heavy Rain (PS3)
Bayonetta – Bayonetta (Xbox 360, Ps3)
BEST
STORY

Alan Wake (Xbox 360)
Alan Wake is the definition of a psychological thriller. Developed by Remedy (Max Payne), the plot tells the story of a best-selling author who is suffering from writers block. So he decides to take a vacation with his wife to the small town of Bright Falls. Things start to get crazy once his wife Alice mysteriously disappears. Wake starts to find pages of what apparently is his manuscript that he has never written. These pages of the manuscript actually reveal some of what is about to happens. There is such a great sense of anxiety of knowing but at the same time not knowing what is going to happen. Picking up a page and reading that a shadowy figure with a chainsaw is going to be bursting through the door really messes with your head since you don’t know which or what door. The story definitely becomes epic and you really don’t know what to expect until the credits role.
Runner-ups:
Mass Effect 2 (Xbox 360, PC)
Red Dead Redemption (Xbox 360, PS3)
Heavy Rain (Ps3)
BEST
VISUALS

What a treat for your eyes. God of War III was not only epic in game play but also in the visuals department. Some of the lighting in the game will drop your jaw at times. Kratos himself looks incredible. To say the attention to detail is impressive would be an understatement. Every single enemy you eviscerate has been expertly crafted to look as good as possible as you spill their blood and or guts. Not only did the characters look great but the world itself was incredible. The textures on the characters as well as the levels is outstanding. Best Part? It all runs without a hitch as you play. No sense of slowdown or hiccups at all. The game definitely deserves its spot as best looking game of 2010.
Runner-ups:
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow (Xbox 360, PS3)
Red Dead Redemption (Xbox 360, PS3)
NBA 2K11 (Xbox 360, PS3)
BEST
SOUNDTRACK

Red Dead Redemption (Xbox 360, PS3)
Some may be baffled to give this one to Red Dead Redemption, but Rockstar did an amazing job in finding the right sounds to this game to make it feel authentic. There is not one moment in this game where you wondered what year you were in, or what area in the United States of America you were riding through. That’s because it all fit perfectly. On top of that, everything in this game was created for it, and certain musical “instruments” were crafted to create that specific sound of the spaghetti western, and it paid off in the end.
Runner-ups:
Alan Wake (Xbox 360)
God of War III (PS3)
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: the Game (Xbox Live Arcade, PSN)
BEST
MOTION GAME

Dance Central (Xbox 360 Kinect)
Dance Central gets the win in the motion area only because it did everything right. Sure, Sports Champions showed exactly what the Move was capable of, and Heavy Rain showed what it could do with a real game, and Kinect Adventures was to Kinect as Sports Champs was to Move. However Dance Central got everything right in the fact that it was not a tech demo, it was fun, and it required practically no skill as all you had to do was mimic the dancer and keep an eye on the upcoming moves – just like Tetris! Sure, Just Dance for the Wii did it first, but this one actually works, and it’s incredibly fun!
Runner-ups:
Sports Champions (PS3 Move)
Kinectimals (Xbox 360 Kinect)
BEST
OVERALL HANDHELD

999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors (DS)
Unfortunately this is one of those games that no one will play no matter how high a score it gets. It’s sad since the game is incredible. What could be considered a text adventure turns into a game that breaks your mind. You play as Junpei. an average young man who wakes up and realizes he is in for a horrible time. He and eight other people have been kidnapped and placed on a ship adrift on the ocean somewhere. They soon realize they have been gathered to play some sick mad man’s game.
Think of the movie SAW. Things get bloody quickly, though, since the characters personalities clash and everyones individual self-preservation instinct comes up against each of the others. They have Nine hours to solve the puzzles and escape the ship before it is sunk. To make matter worse each player has a bomb implanted in them that will detonate if they break any rules. Every choice including the most simple ones ultimately decides how everything turns out. The game is dialogue heavy and there is a lot of reading but fear not the game is amazing and you will find yourself playing multiple times since it has 6 endings.
Runner-ups:
Infinity Blade (Iphone/Ipad)
Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep (PSP)
Super Scribblenauts (DS)
BEST
OVERALL PC GAME

Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty
Although we don’t play as many PC titles as we do console games, we still know a winner when we play it. Blizzard didn’t change too much with this sequel. Which is a good thing. They just added and tweaked some gameplay elements. The single player campaign is very well done and offers a variety of different types and designs. So playing by yourself won’t be as boring as you would first think. Feeling a bit brave though? Try taking the game online with the much improved battle.net. It sports an awesome ranking system and matchmaking that will put you up against people of your own skill level. Lu didn’t feel the same, though, as no matter what he gets destroyed. Very impressive and the wait was definitely worth it.
Runner-ups:
Civilization V
Minecraft
Back to the Future – The Game
BEST
OVERALL Wii GAME

Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars
As you can probably already see, Lu and I love us our fighting games. To be honest, I really didn’t know what to think when I first heard about this game. Once I saw some videos and saw the character list I knew it would be a hit. What other game can you pit video game characters against old school anime stars. The game takes a new approach to controls (probably due to the Wii-mote itself) as Capcom decided to simplify things to just 3 actual buttons. I know what you might be thinking but trust us when we say it works really well. The game packs everything that you would expect from a “VS.” game such as ridiculous over the top finishers and combos, tag team gameplay as well as a unique and varied cast of characters. Although a lot people might be a tad lost on the Tatsunoko side, the characters will still find a place in gamers hearts because they all control so damned well. I just hope Capcom doesn’t abandon this series.
Runner-ups:
Super Mario Galaxy 2
Sonic Colors
Donkey Kong Country Returns
BEST
OVERALL PS3 GAME

Heavy Rain
Press X to Jason.
So, if you’ve been living under a rock or just don’t own a PS3, just know that it comes from the first hour or two of Heavy Rain, a game involving a broken down father, a reporter, an FBI agent, and a private detective. Everything you do leads to a consequence, whether or not you like it. These consequences stay throughout the entire course of the game, also. No mid saves, no continues. Did you just kill the father, who is inevitably the main character of the game? Too bad, slim, keep going and see what else you’ve done for this world.
Many will argue that while it was thrilling, the story did open up some holes, not all the actors were on par with one another, and the kids. Oh god, the kids – they should be shot before our ears continue to bleed. Besides that, the fact that the game had nearly 20 some odd different endings and a multitude of different ways to get there says a lot for this game. Add to that the stunning visuals on the characters – main, supporting, or otherwise – gave it a sense of movie like realism. All you need to do now is find the Origami Killer – who kidnapped your boy – and find him before he kills him. Just how far will you go to save someone you love?
Runner-ups:
God of War III
Gran Turismo 5
3D Dot Game Heroes
BEST
OVERALL
XBOX 360 GAME

Mass Effect 2
What more can be said about a game that lets you craft your own personally tailored space opera? Bioware did an amazing job of fixing what was an already impressive (albeit technically hindered) game. I love when developers actually listen to the gamers and fix things. Gone are the boring empty planets that you were forced to explore in the horrid vehicle. Gone are the slow loading textures. The shooter aspects have also been tweaked. The real draw in the game as I mentioned before is the characters. I have never cared as much for video game characters as I did my crew in this game. Everyone has their own back story and reasons for being the way they are. Every character feels so unique and well thought up.
The most impressive part to me is the amount of power I hold. There are a lot of decisions that play major roles not only in the plot but can affect the lives of yourself and your crew. The game still sports its amazing conversation wheel that was in the first. To be honest, I think all RPGs should use or come up with something similar. It just makes things simple and faster.
Mass Effect 2 is the definition of epic. Not only that it’s a personalized epic tale. Want to be a douche to everyone? Go right on ahead. The game honestly deserves all the praise it gets and then some. Now the question is, how will you save the galaxy?
Runner-ups:
Halo Reach
Alan Wake
Fable 3
Ladies and gentlemen, that wraps up our list. Thanks for reading it all the way through, and feel free to discuss your own list in our forums – or bicker about our list, whichever comes first.
